National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). It is an undergraduate medical entrance test for all medical institutions within India. And you can get admission in dental and medical colleges with this examination.

  • Type of examination: It is a pen-paper type examination (OMR sheet).
  • Duration of the NEET examination: 3 Hours and 20 minutes.
  • NEET exam is conducted in English, Gujarati, Odia, Hindi, Tamil, Assamese, Telugu, Bengali, Urdu, Kannada, Punjabi, Malayalam, and Marathi.

Let’s take a look at the exam pattern

  • Total Questions – 180
  • Subjects – Physics (45 ques), Zoology (45 ques), Chemistry (45 ques), and Botany (45 ques). -1 mark deducted for an incorrect answer
  • Marking Criteria – 4 marks are given for the correct answer
  • Total Marks – 720 (Max. Marks)
  • Sections in the Paper: Section A (35 compulsory questions) & Section B (15 questions in which 10 should be attempted)
  • Required Syllabus for the NEET examinationStudents have to study the whole Syllabus of the NCERT for Biology, Physics, and Chemistry in classes 11 and 12.

Eligibility Criteria for the NEET Examination:

Students must meet the following eligibility criteria to sit in the NEET examination.

Mandatory Subjects students study in class 12

Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English

Students must acquire minimum marks in class 12 

Gen – 50%, PWD – 45%, OBC/SC/ST – 40%

Students minimum age when they give the NEET Examination

Should be 17 Yrs old by 31 Dec 2025

Minimum Percentile for Qualifying for the NEET Examination

  • Students who belong to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), SC—PH, ST—PH, and OBC—PH have to acquire 40 percentiles.
  • Students who belong to Unreserved PH (UR – PH) have to acquire the 45 Percentile.
  • Students who belong to Unreserved (UR) have to acquire 50 percentiles.

Reservation in Medical Seats in Total:

Students who belong to SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PWD are eligible to get reserved seats in the AIQ if they fulfill the eligibility criteria.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will commence the NEET 2025 counseling process after declaring the NEET result. The mode of counselling will be online in July 2025. Be prepared! But before that Let’s dig deeper into the NEET UG Counselling criteria. Students who meet the eligibility criteria and achieve the qualifying percentile can be admitted to the Indian Government Medical Colleges through two types of counseling. NEET UG Counselling is divided into two parts:

Part 1: All India Quota Seats

15% AIQ/Central Universities Counselling Fees:

  • The counseling fee for the unreserved category (UR) is Rs. 11,000/—, of which 1000 rupees are refundable, and 10,000 rupees are non-refundable.
  • The counseling fees for SC/ST/OBC/PWD are Rs. 5500/, of which 500 rupees are refundable, and 5,000 rupees are non-refundable.

Deemed Universities Counselling Fees:

  • The counseling fees for all categories of students are Rs. 2,05,000/—, of which 5000 rupees are refundable and 2,00,000 rupees are non-refundable.

The whole counseling process for NEET admission is as follows:

  • 1st Round of Counselling
  1. Firstly, candidates have to register online from the official MCC website.
  2. Candidates have to pay the fees for counseling sessions.
  3. Candidates must allot seats and fill out the choices they want to take admission.
  4. Candidates have to choose the seat or can upgrade or can exercise free exit.
  5. Candidates upload their certificates and report to the college physically opt for the seat or upgrade.
  6. Candidates who do not allow the seat can participate in Round 2 without fresh registration.

2nd Round of Counselling

  1. Candidates must register fresh for those who have not participated in Round 1.
  2. Candidates have to make fresh choice filling for seat allotment.
  3. Candidates who upgrade from Round 2 to 3 should report to the college physically.
  4. Remember that the upgraded candidate does not claim the Round 1 seat.
  5. Candidates who do not report/join the Round 2 seat after allotment must forfeit the security deposit.
  6. Candidates who do not allot the seat in Round 1 can participate in Round 2 without fresh registration.
  7. Exit with forfeiture of the security deposit when a candidate doesn’t want a Round 2 seat.
  • 3rd Round of Counselling
  1. Candidates must register fresh for those not participating in Rounds 1 & 2.
  2. Candidates must make fresh choice filling for seat allotment.
  3. In this counseling, the candidate does not resign or upgrade.
  4. Upgraded candidates of Round 2 must complete the joining formalities in Round 3.
  5. Candidates who upgrade their seats in Round 2 no longer claim Round 2 seats.
  6. After allotment, candidates not joining the Round 3 seat must exit with forfeiture.
  7. After this counseling, the candidate will not participate in other rounds.
  8. A candidate in the Stray Round is a first-time participant in the NEET counseling sessions and is not allotted a seat in Round 3.

Stray Round

  • Candidates must do fresh registration for this Round.
  • In this Round, data has been shared between the states & centers.
  • Candidates must join the allotted seat/college.
  • Candidates who do not allow a seat in this Round will be prohibited from the NEET examination for one year, and their fees will be forfeited.

  2. Commencement of Academic Session for UG Courses
  • Free Exit: Candidates who opt for free exit are not penalized (Only in Round 1).
  • Exit with Forfeiture: Candidates who choose this option must be penalized and do not get any fees.
  • Note: For All India Quote (AIQ), Deemed + Central Institute, and State Counselling will be announced on the official website.
